GUARANA
(Paullinia cupana)

Guarana is the South American way to promote long-endurance energy. Harvested from the Amazon rain forests, this herb is also used to support mental alertness and fight fatigue. It is widely used in soft drinks throughout Brazil. Guarana is useful for improving athletic performance, fighting fatigue and supporting weight loss.

PROPERTIES: antibacterial, aphrodisiac, astringent, diuretic, febrifuge, nervine, stimulant, tonic, vasodilator.
Parts used: seed

• was said to treat diarrhea, decrease fatigue, reduce hunger and help relieve arthritis.

• use in treating hangovers from alcohol abuse and headaches related to menstruation.

• well as continuing to be administered for chronic diarrhea.

• said to be of benefit for nervous headache or the distress that accompanies menstruation or even exhaustion following dissipation.

• Guaranine (which is nearly identical to caffeine) and the closely related alkaloids, theobromine and theophylline, make up the primary active agents in Guarana.

SUGGESTED DOSAGE: Tincture: 10 to 60 drops three times a day or 2 to 10 pumps of the spray.

CONTRA INDICATIONS: Caffeine may have adverse effects on the blood vessels and other body systems as well as on a developing fetus; and presumably, guaranine would have similar effects, but this has not yet been proven. Though Guarana contains caffeine, it is more slowly absorbed into the gastrointestinal tract and thus is said to have a longer-lasting effect than coffee.
Pregnant and nursing women and people with high blood pressure or cardiovascular disease should not use Guarana. It is not recommended in large amounts (many times the recommended dosage) because of its high guaranine/caffeine content, as it may cause sleeplessness and other possible health risks associated with caffeine. Do not take Guarana if you are taking the following medicines used for manic depression:
Lithium (Eskalith®, Lithane®, Lithotabs®) or mental illness (Clozapine) .
