PLEURISY ROOT

(Asclepias Tuberosa)


Used by Native Americans for over 1000 years before entering European pharmocopoeias in the 18th century. A bitter, nutty-flavored tonic herb that increases perspiration, relieves spasms, and acts as an expectorant.

PROPERTIES: anodyne, anti-spasmodic, carminative (mildly), cathartic (mildly-large doses), diaphoretic, diuretic, emetic (large doses), expectorant, nervine (slightly sedative), stimulant tonic

Pleurisy root (Asclepias tuberosa)
· stimulates expectoration and with a large increases use of liquid, it subdues inflammation, bringing about some reabsorption of fluids from the lungs
· eases chest congestion which reduces painful breathing
· useful for calming spasms and relaxing the body
· increases urine secretions and perspiration
· effective in treatment of bronchia and respiratory ailments, to break up congestion due to colds, flu, chest congestion, etc.
· may be combined with Capsicum, Lobelia and for Grindelia in pulmonary congestion
· often combined with Angelica and Sassafras for producing perspiration in fever and pleurisy and for equalizing the circulation of the blood
· externally for bruises, wounds, ulcers and rheumatism

SUGGESTED DOSAGE: should be used as directed by a qualified professional practitioner.
Tincture - Spray:
3-6 pumps three times daily.
Extract:
½ tsp 3 times daily.
Contra Indications:
Avoid during pregnancy or lactation. May interfere with existing cardia drug therapy or hormonal therapy. May cause nausea and stomach upset.
